Memorial songs for a service or celebration of life

24 songs · Updated 4 October 2026

Choosing music for a memorial is one of the few parts of a service that can sound like the person. If you are doing it now, we are sorry for your loss, and we hope this makes the choice a little easier.

The songs are grouped by the kind of gathering and the part of it they usually fill: hymns, songs about loss, songs for someone gone too soon, and lighter songs for a celebration of life. They work for a parent, a partner, a friend or a grandparent. If you are planning a service for your mother, we also have a list just for that.

Hymns and songs of faith

For a church service, or a family where faith mattered.

  1. 1

It Is Well with My Soul — Audrey Assad

A hymn written after great loss, sung simply. Steadying in the first part of a service.

  2. 2

The Lord's My Shepherd — Stuart Townend

Psalm 23 set to a gentle tune. Easy for a congregation to sing.

  3. 3

Amazing Grace — Judy Collins, 1970

The most chosen hymn of all, here sung almost unaccompanied.

  4. 4

Go Rest High on That Mountain — Vince Gill, 1995

Written after his brother died. Country gospel that suits a rural or southern service.

  5. 5

    I Can Only Imagine — MercyMe, 2001

About meeting God face to face. For a service where faith brings comfort.

For reflection or a tribute slideshow

Slow and steady. A four-minute song holds about fifty photos.

  1. 6

    Hallelujah — Jeff Buckley, 1994

Long, searching and beautiful. Many families prefer the Leonard Cohen original for a church.

  2. 7

Tears in Heaven — Eric Clapton, 1992

Written after his son died. Quiet and honest about not knowing.

  3. 8

Wish You Were Here — Pink Floyd, 1975

For someone who loved rock and would not have wanted a hymn.

  4. 9

One Sweet Day — Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995

About seeing someone again one day. Grows into a big, comforting chorus.

  5. 10

Time to Say Goodbye — Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli, 1996

Grand and moving, without words most guests will need to follow.

  6. 11

Who Wants to Live Forever — Queen, 1986

Dramatic and tender. For a Queen fan, or a life that burned bright.

  7. 12

Danny Boy — Johnny Cash, 2002

The Irish farewell, sung by Cash near the end of his own life. Weathered and true.

  8. 13

    Photograph — Ed Sheeran, 2014

About keeping someone close through pictures. Made for a photo montage.

A song about their life

Some families ask for a song written about the person: where they grew up, what they loved, the things they always said. If that would help, TunedForYou can write one from what you tell us. It can be played at the service, at a memorial later, or kept for the family.

Tell us about them

You tell us about them, we write and sing it, and you hear a preview before you decide.

For someone who died too young

For a child, a teenager, a young parent or a friend.

  1. 14

If I Die Young — The Band Perry, 2010

Bittersweet and gentle. Often chosen for a young woman or a teenager.

  2. 15

See You Again — Wiz Khalifa, 2015

Written for Paul Walker. For a friend or brother, and a younger crowd.

  3. 16

    Forever Young — Alphaville, 1984

Melancholy eighties synth. For someone who will always be the age they were.

  4. 17

Dancing in the Sky — Dani and Lizzy, 2016

Simple and tender, written by two young sisters. Often played at services for young people.

  5. 18

Who You'd Be Today — Kenny Chesney, 2005

About wondering what someone would have become. Hard to hear, and true.

For a celebration of life

Lighter songs for a gathering that remembers the joy as well as the loss, and for leaving the service.

  1. 19

My Way — Frank Sinatra, 1969

For someone who lived on their own terms. One of the most played funeral songs in the world.

  2. 20

Live Like You Were Dying — Tim McGraw, 2004

About living fully once you know time is short. For someone who did exactly that.

  3. 21

Spirit in the Sky — Norman Greenbaum, 1969

Fuzzy guitar and a grin. A classic song to walk out to.

  4. 22

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life — Monty Python, 1979

For someone with a dark sense of humour who would have wanted people laughing.

  5. 23

    Don't Stop Me Now — Queen, 1978

For a celebration of life party. Pure energy, in their honour.

  6. 24

The Dance — Garth Brooks, 1990

I could have missed the pain, but I would have had to miss the dance. Comforting at the end.

A few practical things

Check what the venue allows

Some churches only allow hymns during the service itself; secular songs may be fine at the start, the end or the gathering afterwards. The celebrant or funeral director will know.

Two or three songs is enough

A typical service has room for one song as people come in, one for reflection or a slideshow, and one to leave to.

Ask the people who knew them best

Friends often remember the song they always put on at parties. Family remembers the one from the car. Ask both.

Have someone else press play

Send the files to the venue ahead, bring a copy on a USB stick, and give the job of starting the music to someone who is not giving a eulogy.
